Abstract

This study examines how sharia control in Aceh reproduces religious aesthetics through dress practices and social responses in public space. Previous studies have largely framed sharia control as moral regulation, repression, or resistance, leaving limited attention to how such practices shape visible forms of religiosity in social life. Using an interpretive qualitative approach, this study analyzes publicly available visual materials, online news reports, and social media responses related to dress regulation in Aceh, Indonesia. Data were collected through systematic documentation of Islamic dress standards, media representations of sharia enforcement in public space, and public comments on social media. The data were analyzed through visual analysis and thematic coding to identify how dress standards are represented, enforced, and socially interpreted. The findings show that religious aesthetics are reproduced through visual representations, regulatory practices, and social responses that reiterate norms in public space. The study argues that sharia control stabilizes religious aesthetics through visibility and repetition.
